If I'm reading the question correctly: y = 1 / (4x + 2)

The slope is the derivative. Using the quotient rule (see related link): d/dx of g(x)/h(x) = ( g'(x)h(x) - g(x)h'(x) ) / (h(x))2

So, g(x) = 1, and h(x) = 4x + 2, and g'(x) = 0, h'(x) = 4. So dy/dx = -4/(4x + 2)2.
