There is, or was, a distinction between what they used to teach in school about tons - there were "long" tons and "short" tons. A short ton is 2,000 pounds, almost always referred to simply as "a ton". A long ton was 2,200 pounds. I don't think I have ever seen a reference to "long tons" of anything, though it probably has a use in some area.
