Another way to look at it:
In any algebraic equation, you have to remember the golden rule, which is "what you do to one side, you must do to the other". And in order to determine what x is, you have to do the reverse operation to both sides:
x + 3 = 5
x - 3 = 5 - 3
x = 2
x + 5 = -3
minus the 5 from both sides
this gives you:
x = 2
there is your answer!
x = -2
x + 5 = 3 x = -2
If you mean: x-5+5x = -3 then x = 1/3
Well, if x+3=5 and 2+3=5, I'm guessing x should equal 2
