There is the mathematical use and statistical use of the word "dependent" as explained on the related link. The mathematical use is a dependent variable is the outcome of a function with one or more independent variables. The statistical definition in the setting of an experiment, is similar, it is a variable which is expected to be affected by changes in independent variables. Example: If I don't eat (quantity of food- independent variable), I will be hungry (dependent variable). I will not have as much energy (second dependent variable). But nothing is perfect in experimentation. The circumstances of the experiment with numerous unknown relationships may cause unexpected results. In observational studes, with typically less control, variables can be hypothesized (or conjectured) to be related, i.e. global warming causes artic ice to melt, and artic ice melting leads to more global warming. This would also be called a feedback effect. I can produce a dependent series of numbers from an independent series. If I take a series of random numbers of size N which come from a given distribution, and rank them from low to high , with n = 1 for the lowest and n = N for the highest, the ranks become dependent variables. A change in one value could affect the rank of another variable. I have included some more information on dependent variables. See related links.

Does a bi variate study have two dependent variables?

It does not have to. It is simply a study where two variables have a joint probability density function. There is no requirement for both variables to be dependent - one may be dependent on the other (which is independent).

What are the two important variables in a research title?

Dependent and Independent variables

Can you have two dependent variables?

You can have many dependent variables. If you measure the length, width and height of a solid block of metal and have temperature as the changing variable; the length, width, and height can be the dependent variables.

What are the two types of variables in an experiment?

Dependent and independent

Dependent and independent variables in biology?

Two kinds of variable.....

Independent and dependent are types of what?

Independent and dependent are types of variables. These variables are used mostly in science and math. When using independent variables you can control them dependent variables you cannot.

What are indepenent and dependent variables?

Dependent variable change and independent variables do not change.

How do the independent and dependent variables in an experiment compare?

the independent variable controls the dependent variables

Independent variables and dependent variables on a pendulum?

it is....

What is the differecnce between independent variables and dependent variables?

Every time the independent variables change, the dependent variables change.Dependent variables cannot change if the independent variables didn't change.

What statistical test to run when comparing the effects of two dichotomous variables on a dependent variable Anova Manova Why would you choose it?

If there are only two variables, then the dependent variable has only one variable it can depend on so there is absolutely no point in calculating multiple regression. There are no other variables!

What are independent and dependent variables in science?

Dependent variable is the variable that can be measured. However, the independent variable is the variable that changes in the two groups.
