Assuming that you are referring to US coins, it does not seem to be possible, even if obsolete denominations are allowed, to use five different denominations of coins to make exactly 50 cents. I am not aware of any other countries that use "cents" that would allow you to do so either. The answer will depend on the country whose currency you are asking about. Many countries use cents and the coinage varies from country to country. Some have 2 cent coins or 20 cent coins, others have 25.
