We ask ourselves: What can fit into the whole number, and can also fit into the denominator? (the lower number)

In this case 10 can fit into both numbers. (10 x 3 = 30, 10 x 10 = 100)

So we cancel out the 30 and leave a 3, and we cancel out the 100 and leave a 10.

Our problem now looks like this: 6/10 x 3

Now we always try to simplify our fraction as much as we can, in this case the 6/10 can be simplified down to 3/5 (3x2 = 6 and 5 x 2 = 10)

Our problem now looks like this: 3/5 x 3.

To make this easier we try to make the whole number into a fraction. In this case we can make the 3 into 3/1, they are both the exactly the same thing.

3/5 x 3/1. Now we just multiply the top numbers with the top numbers and the bottom numbers with the bottom numbers. 3 x 3 = 9 and 5 x 1 = 5. The fraction now looks like this : 9/5.

Since we are looking for the percent we need to make the denominator into 100, 5 x 20 = 100 and 9 x 20 = 180. Our answer now looks like this: 180/100

Since 100 has 2 zeroes in it we move the decimal place 2 places to the LEFT.

180.0 -> 18.0 -> 1.80. 1.80 is the exact same as 1.8. So 6 percent of 30 is 1.8.
