The city of Delphi was first inhabited during the Mycenaean era. It began as a temple in worship for the god, Apollo, but throughout the years became known for its strength as an oracle priestess. Pythia, the priestess was so accurate in her predictions, that no one dared plan anything of importance without initially consulting with the Oracle.
The Greeks did go to an oracle when they needed help or advice. One of the most famous oracles was the Oracle at Delphi. The actual oracle is known as the Pythia.
