They believed in a heliocentric universe. This meaning that the earth was not the center of the universe, but that the sun was. However, many people , including the church, did not agree with this theory. Instead they believed in a geocentric universe. Plato and Aristotle believed in this theory.

He was advanced the case for heliocentrism - which was accepted by some of the Church, and the Pope had previously approved it when Nicholas Copernicus put it forward, and the Pope actually wrote a foreword to his work. Galileo's problem was that he wouldn't listen to reason and accept ANY advice.
