The largest value of the metric system is that it is uniform and works.

The metric system, or more correctly the SI system, can measure pretty much anything. It uses seven base units; length-metre, mass-kilogram, time-second, temperature-kelvin, electric current-ampere, luminous intensity-candela, amount of substance-mole. From these seven all the other units are derived. Speed is metre per second, acceleration metre per second per second, force(in newtons) kilogram times metres divided by seconds squared. Energy is newtons times metres.
