Whether the number is positive or negative is not relevant. What matters is the sign of the exponent. If THAT is positive then the decimal point is moved to the right.

Can every decimal be written in scientific notation?

Yes - you can always convert numbers to scientific notation - whether they're whole numbers, or decimals.

How do you write 10.4 in scientific notation?

It took me forever to learn scientific notation because of how the exponents seem backwards. When you move the decimal to the left (towards the negative numbers in a line) your exponent will be positive. When you move the decimal to the right (towards the positive numbers in line) your exponent will be negative. So since we need a number between 1-9 in order have scientific notation we have to move our decimal one place to the left. 10.4 -> 1.04 x 101

How to convert between non-scientific notation numbers and scientific notation?

first you put a decimal behind the first whole or non zero number then how ever many spacesyou moved is the positive or negative power of 10

When you have a scientific notation how many numbers should be on front of the decimal?

Define scientific notation?

Scientific notation is a way of representing numbers, usually very large or very small, in the forma*10b where 1 ? |a| < 10 is a decimal number and b is an integer (negative or positive).a is called the mantissa and b is called the exponent.

What is a more compact method of expressing large numbers and vary small decimal numbers?

How do you convert 0.4428 into scientific notation?

Since .4428 is to the ten thousandths place, and scientific notation only takes an integer, a decimal point and then the numbers after it, the scientific notation would be 4.428 * 10-1

Basic parts of the scientific notation?
