Imperialism split the country apart. (Imperialists/Anti-Imperialists) We hadn't seen this kind of separation since the Civil War. Imperialism led most to not follow the original values our fore fathers set out for us in the Declaration of Independence. We were controlling other countries instead of letting them govern themselves. (e.g. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam) We overall ended up with a better economy, and became a more powerful nation.
