Are they located in the same building? If the geographical difference between locations are vast, then a WAN setup is in order. The basic components of a WAN would be routers, satellites, ISP mainframes, transmission media (Fiber Optics backbones, Power lines, network cables etc). The main component of a WAN is definitley a router though.
