It depends on what the vehicle is. If it has an electric fuel pump (located in the fuel tank ), it's usually the "sending unit", or the wiring related to the sending unit". If the fuel pump IS in the fuel tank, you'll have to drop the tank, remove the pump from the tank, and replace the sending unit. I would replace the fuel pump and the related parts that go back into the tank as well. It may sound crazy to do so, but , while you have the tank down, you should replace All related parts. I have a problem with my 97' Park Ave. fuel gage, and will have to go through the same thing. The sending unit alone is about 160.00, the pump and the sending unit together are 298.00......do it all while your in that deep.
