You've left out a name.... I'll call her Alice Alice + Brian + Clive = 4700

Alice = Brian +1000

Clive = Brian - 800 Now, if we put those bits into the first equation we get.....

(Brian +1000) + Brian + (Brian - 800) = 4700 Remove the brackets and we have

Brian + 1000 + Brian + Brian - 800 = 4700

Brian + Brian + Brian +200 = 4700

3 times Brian = 4700 - 200

3 times Brian = 4500

Brian = 1500 So now we can see that Alice gets 2500, Brian gets 1500 and Clive gets 700

2500 + 1500 + 700 = 4700
