When do you use surd?

Surds are used in pythagoras' thereom where a2 +b2=c2

The answer (c2) then has to be square rooted and if it is a not a square number then you will end up with a surd

A surd can also be used to represent an irrational number rather as it is more accurate and saves time when writing it out
