The equations in math textbooks are of two types:

1) Equations like (a+b)^2 = a^2 +2ab + b^2. This is a formula, rule or theorem which tells you how to square a binomial. These theorems have been proven and collected over hundreds of years by mathematicians.

2) Find the solution set to x^2 + 5x -14 = 0. There are hundreds of equations in the exercise sets of any math text. The authors of the text make them up, and organize them so that they gradually get harder, and you can get better at solving them as you go through the exercises. ( The answer is { -7, 2 }. )
