the casting number is located on the drivers side at the very back of the block on the top. it will be right above the bell housing. also on the front of the block in front of the head where the head fits on the block will be a series of numbers that will tell you if the engine had a 2 bbl carb. or a 4 bbl carb. and if the car came with ac. again this is on the drivers side.
These filters are externally the same. Might be some internal difference. Both work on a small block Chevy. EDIT: According to the fram website these filters are the same basic size but the PH5 has an antidrainback valve and the PH13 does not.
