Currently, the Lord Chancellor exercises an executive, legislative and judicial role.
Since the Lord Chancellor is a member of the Queen's Most Honourable Privy Council, he can advise the Sovereign on the exercise of executive functions (note however that it would be unusual for a privy counsellor, even a minister, to advise the Queen when they are not the prime minister). The Lord Chancellor is also a member of the House of Commons, and therefore may propose bills, debate issues and cast a vote on any matters before the Commons. (Previously, the Lord Chancellor presided over meetings of the House of Lords, the Upper House of Parliament.)
The Lord Chancellor is also responsible for the proper functioning and independence of the courts, though he or she no longer acts as head of the judiciary (as those functions have since been transferred to the Lord Chief Justice).
