The surface area of a sheet of paper is that two-dimensional boundary of the paper that is exposed to the outside surroundings.
For example: Assume the surface area of a sheet of paper of area size a is A = 2a because there are two distinct surfaces (e.g., front and back) exposed to the surroundings.
But now we fold the sheet into half. So now the surface area exposed to the surroundings is 1/2 a X 2 = a < A.
In other words, by folding the paper in half we have reduced the surface area by one-half. If we simply extend that thought to include crumpling a piece of paper as meaning creating lots of folds it is reasonable to assume that the amount of area exposed to the outside will be reduced.
In other words, the surface area of a crumpled piece of paper will be less than or equal to the same area of the uncrumpled piece. But generally and typically it will be less than the uncrumpled area. ANS

Air resistance is the key. In a vacuum a piece of paper and a brick, dropped at the same time, will reach the ground at the same time. When atmosphere is added to the mix the papers area figures in when and where the paper will land. The bigger it is the more air it will capture and its' decent will be slowed.

Why doesn't paper reflect light?
Because of surface stuctural irregularity of the the paper. Light photons that comes in contact wih the irregular surface will either be absorbed (light rays are trapped, can't escape/blocked) or reflected in random directions. In other words, the irregular reflections cannot form an image or produced a badly distorted image. That explains why when you look into some paper (e.g. decorative papers) you can only see the mirror image produce will be just an ambiguos vague shape of, e.g. your face.

Since the unfolded paper have to move more molecules because of its bigger surface, it will move slower through the air since the papers have the same gravital pull and therefore the same amount of force moving them downward.
