If you mean: (2.58*10^7) times (3.6*10^-2) then it is 9.288*10^5 = 928800
0.000000858 in Scientific Notation = 8.58 x 10-7
You can use a base other than 10. Such as binary or hexedecimal or scientific notation. You can also write it out in English or the language of your choice.
The choice of 10 as the base in scientific notation is mainly due to historical reasons and the fact that humans use a decimal system in everyday life. Using base 10 in scientific notation allows for easy conversion between powers of 10 and ordinary numbers, making calculations and comparisons more intuitive. Additionally, the vast majority of scientific measurements and quantities tend to fall within a range that can be adequately represented using powers of 10.
In general, they are not.If you are thinking of the distance from the earth to the sun, then there are more convenient units. Even so, using scientific notation, that is a trivial problem. In general, they are not.If you are thinking of the distance from the earth to the sun, then there are more convenient units. Significant figures is a way of trying to convey how accurately something is being measured. A very accurate scale may measure .001 grams, a bathroom scale may be only accurate to within 2 lbs. Exponential notation has nothing to do with measurement. It is just a choice on how to write a number, usually for some mathematical application. 243 = 35 this is exponential 'notation'. Scientific notation is a certain type of exponential notation in which the base must be 10. 243 = 2.43 x 102 that is scientific notation.

I understand Scientific Notation as for example 1.3E2, which = 130 as the 2 is the exponent of the 10 by which the 1.3 is multiplied. My calculator & other sources give alternatively, Engineering Notation, in which the same would be 1.3 X 102 Same number, 130. Yet I've seen the latter also described as "Scientific". The choice is yours. I find E.N. slightly clearer for index-arithmetic but that's a matter of practice. Cor! All this struggling to write indices in a text message, and I've just spotted that Answers gives super- and sub- script keys in its tool-bar!
