The main difference between a von neumann/stored program computer and a harvard computer is that the harvard computer has two entirely separate memories: one just for instructions (that is only connected to the CU) and one just for data (that is only connected to the ALU and I/O). As a standard harvard computer cannot modify/write its own program the instruction memory is typically entirely ROM and requires special external means of loading it.
