Is median easily affected by extreme scores?

No. That is one of the reasons it is used in preference to the mean. No, it is not.

Moving Average?

I’ve talked in some recent posts about central tendency and how stock prices may be considered to cluster around a central value over time. I mentioned the mean, median, and mode as three common measures of central tendency. I also touched one of the main problems with using the mean – its outsized sensitivity to extreme values. Let’s look at another measure that investment analysts are much more likely to consider, the moving average. Since stock prices plotted on a graph create lines that can look like a random zigzag with no rhyme or reason, it’s often necessary to create a trend line to show the overall movement of the stock price without all the noise of major up-and-down jumps. This process of showing the overall trend and ignoring the smaller deviations from that trend is called “smoothing” the data. One method that is often used to smooth the data when it comes to stock price lines is the moving average. The way a moving average works is to take into account the most recent observations and create an average of them. So let’s say you have a stock for which you’re trying to smooth out the price line. If you want to create a moving average you have to first decide over which period you’re looking at. Many investment analysts will look at a 20 day moving average. That simply means that they will plot a line that shows, on each day, a point that is equal to the average price over the previous 20 days. So this line will shift along with the price line, but it will move more slowly and less erratically. This line is much more effective than the long-term historic average price line because it will filter out the extreme values that may have occurred in time periods longer than 20 days ago. Another problem with using a long term average price as a measure of central tendency is that prices do shift over time and the most recent price is more of a predictor of the next price than the price from three months ago or a few years ago. For this reason the moving average is a more apt predictor of the prices to expect next than the long-term historic average price.

Which of three three measures of central tendency is most affected by extreme scores?

Of the mean, median and mode the mean would be most affected.

What is the measure of central tendency that is least affected by extreme values?

the variance

The measure of central tendency that is most affected by a few large or small numbers is?

The mean is the measure of central tendency that is most affected by a few large or small numbers. The median is more robust for extreme values.

What measures of central location is affected most by extreme values?

The mean is most affected. Mode and Median are not influenced as much by outliers.

Importance of measures of central tendency?

Measures of the general value are a common need. Average, Median, and Mode are the three commonest.Average is the arithmetic average of all the values.Median is the actual measurement which is midwaybetween the extreme values, and is often closest to the average.Mode is the commonest value.Other indicators of central tendency, may ignore all value beyond say, three standard deviations, and thus ignore the contribution by the extreme, and uncommon, values.

When is the mean used as a measure of central tendency?

When there aren't extreme values (outliers)

What are the characteristics of a good measure of central tendency?

Properties of a good measure of central tendency are:-It should be rigidly defined. It should include all observations.it should be simple to understand and easy to calculate.it should be capable of further mathematical treatment. It should be least affected by extreme observations.it should possess sampling stability.

What is a good measure of central tendency if a data set contains extreme values that may be the result of incorrect measurement?

The median.

What is the appropriate measure of central tendency for age?

The appropriate measure of central tendency for age is the median. This is because age is a continuous variable and can have outliers or extreme values, which can skew the mean. The median provides a more robust estimate of the center of the distribution.

What is an advantage to using the median when examining a set of data?

The median or mode should be used instead of the mean in distributions with extreme outliers. In such cases, the mean can be a misleading measure of central tendency and the median value or the mode value are typically more accurate measures.

What is the duration of Extreme Measures?

The duration of Extreme Measures is 1.97 hours.

Why are there three measures of Central Tendency What if anything makes one better than the others?

Answer with an exampleIf you have a data series like: 1,2,2,3 What is the mean, median and mode of this thing:Mean= 2Median = 2Mode = 2Now if you have 1,2,2,3,1000Then we gotta have three measures asMode remains = 2Median shifts slightly toward threeMean becomes 201.6So you can see that three measures are required to capture the tendency of a data set in a more complete fashion.Although the mean does have this problem of being distorted by outliers (extreme values), it is the best measure of central tendency if more sophisticated analyses are required. This is because the properties of the mean, itself, are better understood. This means there is a wide range of powerful statistical techniques that can be applied to data using the mean.
