To compare fractions, if the denominators (bottom numbers) are the same, the greater fraction is the one with the larger numerator (top number); however, if the numerators are the same, then the larger fraction is the one with the smaller denominator.

As the numerators are the same, the one with the smaller denominator is the larger fraction, thus 1/2 is greater than 1/6

Alternatively, making them equivalent fractions with the same denominator:

1/6 → 1/6

1/2 → 1x3/2x3 = 3/6

3 is greater than 1, so 3/6 is greater than 1/6, thus 1/2 is greater than 1/6
