The heaviest recorded person in the world was American Jon Brower Minnoch (1941-83). At the age of 12, he weighed 294 pounds (132 kg). He achieved his peak weight of approximately 1400 pounds (634 kg) at the age of 37 in 1978, by which time he was hospitalized due to cardiac and respiratory failure. His peak weight was only a close estimation, because his incredible size and poor health didn't allow him to use a scale.

His weight was due to the fact that he was diagnosed with generalized edema, a condition which can be defined simply by the word "swelling." Sixteen months later, he was discharged from the hospital and went on a strict diet. He lost approximately 924 pounds (419 kg), the biggest weight loss of recorded human beings. However, his condition got more and more difficult to treat, so he discontinued treatment and died two years later.
