This is a little more historic then mathematical, but its fine in either subject. Back thousands of years ago, ancient civilizations first created a machine to calculate how long it took for an entire year/cycle of seasons to occur. They narrowed it down to about 365.25 days for an entire rotation around the sun. That's also why we have a leap day every 4 years, because we have that extra quarter of a year every year.
