The letter was written to Mary, the mother of Jesus Messieh. The greeting "Elect Lady" refers to Mary. The word used for elect is not ekklesia, but rather eklektos, meaning picked out or chosen. Mary is elect by virtue of the virgin birth, and is called "highly favored" (Luke 1:28). "Favored" here means honored. Mary was chosen as the "elect" vessel, look at the prophecies of the virgin birth. The word "chosen" is also the same word "elect" in many passages of Scripture (see-"eklektos": Mat 20:16; 22:14,22; Luk 23:35; Rom 16:13; 1Pet 2:4,9; Rev 17:14). Elect, chosen, is in reference to a person's place among the redeemed as chosen by God prior to the foundation of the world for His purpose. John was writing to her so she could pass on information to the church (her children, as being the Mother of Jesus, she becomes the "spiritual grandmother").
