Many scientists now believe the Bermuda Triangle to be over a source of methane gas vents located on the ocean floor. These vents are located elsewhere and are pretty common knowledge to geologists. The Bermuda Traingle (and its vents) are in a heavily trafficked shipping/transportation lane, which is why ships and planes have encountered so many problems with it.
There have been studies done with scale models of freighters and tankers (allowing for weight, size and bouyancy) in controlled environments which have shown that methane bubbles (again, the size and amount of bubbles were controlled to scale)escaping are sufficient to negate the bouyancy of vessels unfortunate enough to pass over them at the wrong time, causing the vessels to sink.
As far aeroplanes, well methane doesn't just stop at the waters' surface. It is a lighter-than-air gas and therefore continues to rise. Theories also postulate that the methane, being a highly combustible gas, could exist in sufficient density to cause a in-air explosion due to the jets' or other internal combustion engines going thru the gas cloud.
I'm not sure if these theories have become scientific fact, you may want to search the web for additional information. The last time I had actually studied the Bermuda Triangle this was the one of the major prevailing theories being researched at the time. I am not a scientist, only an interested layperson.
