The system was designed so that they would be consistent.

If you have different units, converting to any common unit will help. Of course, using standard units, i.e. SI units, is better than any other arbitrary unit. Also, SI units for a consistent set of units; as a result, you can often omit proportionality factors from formulae.

Mainly that it is a world-wide standard. Other benefits include the simplicity of calculating with it, and the fact that it is a consistent set of units.
Quite simply, the result will also come out in different units. The formula can only be used when a consistent set of units is used. In the SI, this is especially simple, since it was designed from the ground up to be a consistent set of units.
Derived SI units.
You have to multiply that by the value for gravity. Near the surface of the Earth, this is about 9.8, in SI units. For using consistent units, you must first convert the mass to kilograms; the answer will be in newtons.
SI and metric are the same units.
International System of Units (SI)
SI is an international standard system of units. Most people would call it the metric system. SI has standards for the kilogram and meter that can be referenced, to make and calibrate measuring devices.
