Kerosene

Use: fuel for jet engines

Kerosene generally contains benzene which has been designated a carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), the International agency for Research on Cancer and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

It is estimated that the amount of fuel dumped by aircraft ( all types ) in the period 1990 to 1999 was approx 7 million kilos or 7 thousand tonnes.

Benzene may produce blood changes that include reduced platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells; also aplastic anemia, and acute nonlymphatic leukemia. Benzene has produced fetal death in laboratory animals and caused chromosome changes in humans and mutation changes in cells of other organisms.

Aviation fuels arecomplex mixtures which can contain small amounts of dangerous components.

Inhalation, therefore, presents a potential hazard in that this could result in absorption into the bloodstream and possibly systemic damage.
