The mathematics of the 5 pointed star and the pentagon include the Fibonacci ratios (Golden Mean= PHI and little phi) ad infinitum. Thus these symbols can be regarded as "NATURE' and "SCIENCE" which the Catholic Church suppressed and seemed to abhor for centuries. Owing to the number of Masons active in the formation of United States ( which by the way was a reaction to religious dogma), they used these symbols on our flag, as our military power( THE PENTAGON), and our military leaders wearing the highest degree of service being 5 star generals all wearing 5 5-pointed stars. Moreover, they believed GOD were represented on earth as a duality both male & female. Since "EVE"N numbers were considered female and ODD numbers considered male, the 1st female number is "2" and the 1st male number "3" and these add up to "5". Thus 5 represents the power of GOD being both male & female. Also, the product of 2 X 3 = SIX which represents the children of males & females and is the number of "MAN".

It was George Washington's feeling, and many others of that time, that a proper star had either 6, 7, or 8 points. He and many others believed that a five pointed star was incorrect. Not sure exactly how the five pointed star became common to the U.S. flag and such.

Which planet is associated with the pentagram shape?

A pentagram is an unbroken five pointed star representing Earth, Air, Fire, Water and the Spirit. The pentagram shape comes from the path that the planet Venus makes across the night sky. Others say it is associated with stars in general rather than with a particular planet. You can easily find 50 five pointed stars on the American flag.

What does a star with a circle around it mean and does the symbol represent the Jewish?

The Jewish Star, known as the Star of David, is a six-pointed star formed by two superimposed equilateral triangles. (see link.) A five-pointed star in a circle has a number of different meanings. It is used widely throughout the U.S. with many variations, as a representation of law enforcement, particularly in the Southwest U.S. (see link.) The five-pointed star formed by interwoven lines of equal length, within a circle, can also represent the nature religion, Wicca. The five sides of the star represent the five sacred elements of earth, air, water, fire and spirit. (see link) A five-pointed star, often with one point larger than the others, pointing downward, is also associated with Satanism. (see link.) Ironically, the same five-pointed star, with one long point directed downward, is used in Christian art as the Star of Bethlehem, pointing the way toward the Christ Child. (see link.)

What is a shape with ten sides and not a decagon?

In 2-d, the naming of polygons is such that a 10 sided shape is a decagon. Even if it is a 5-pointed star shape, it is a decagon. A concave decagon (rather than convex) but still a decagon. In 3-d, a decahedron, possibly, with the term "sides" being used for "faces".
