The reason a milk carton (which has a square footprint) looks like a prism is that when it is viewed from the the side, there will always be a face of the carton hidden from view. A maximum of three sides will be visible (but only one if it is viewed on a line of sight perpendicular to any face or side) when a viewer is looking at the carton. The three-sided solid figure that it looks like is called a prism.
