Why do teachers have math packets?

The primary reason for math packets is to allow students to work on assignments at their own level and own pace. While students are working quietly on the packets, we teachers can work one on one with special needs students. A well designed math packet has not only the problems, but explanations and examples so that students know what they are doing. It also may have a challenge or higher level problem that advanced students might enjoy.

The set of math packets can be used to document what a student worked on during the quarter. It also can be used by the student as a review aid before a test.

What do you need to study to become a math teacher?

The best is to have a college degree and be a math major. Many math teachers do not have degrees in math, however, my personal opinion is that formal math education is a big plus (pun intended) for math teachers. Some math teachers have computer science backgrounds. In many cases, teachers who want to teach math without a math degree need to pass a test to do so. So if you want to be a math teacher, go to college and major in math! Then you also have to get a teaching credential. Some schools have combined math bs and teaching programs.
