The rest of Europe uses metric measurements, but Britain has historically held out from converting as the public are seen as unwilling to accept any changes - the currency was only decimalised (changed from 12d to a shilling, 20s to a pound to 100p to a pound) in 1971, against much consumer pressure.
For this reason, fluids are sold in pints and distances are measured in miles. However, recent changes have put metric weight measures first for loose groceries (fruit and vegetables). Additionally, milk is now often sold in litres rather than pints. Petrol (gasoline) switched from gallons to litres in the 1980s with little complaints, and weather forecasts switched from F to C at around the same time. Wines and spirits are sold in metric quantities.
For all measures, the government now uses metric measurements for official purposes and children are only taught metric measurements at school.
However, people continue to prefer their speeds in MPH and their beer in pints and the government is reluctant to change this as it is (possibly wrongly) felt that it will open up wider questions to do with the British relationship to the European Union.
