Why does Manhattan's grid system have numbers instead of names?

Can you imagine being on Houston street and sending someone to a street that would be where, let's say, 225th street would be? How would you do that? How would you know what street id before what? I guess it was easier than trying to name all those streets. I could be wrong. Anyone?
