Members of the Nation of Islam often mark themselves with the letter X in their names to signify that they were a slave (more than the one sided "owned by a white man") and have been freed, now searching for their way back home.

also, it represents the mathematical term X. A lot of people over there are something like an "Asiatic" and like Mathematics.
