Why is meter the basic metric unit in measuring length?

In More detail, The metric system was invented in France at 1790. At that time people were using 700 different types of Rulers which was quite messy and hard. So the geometry unification committee decided 3 types of proposals:

1. The length of a clock pendulum which has a time length of 1 second.

2.The length of the equator

3. 1 forty millionth of the length of the prime meridian.

The first one was scrapped because when deciding the length, time gets in the way. The second one was also scrapped because it was hard to measure the length of the equator, so finally the 3 one made it. This is how our 1 meter came.

But the new length of a meter came out, the waves of light, so at 1960 this new rule came out 'The waves of the light of krypton 86 at vacuum status's 1650763.73 times is now 1 meter' . Well they had to change it again, with the evidence that light travels in the same speed at vacuum, they made a new 1 meter. 1 meter is now how much light can travel in two hundred and ninety nine million seven hundred and ninety two thousand and four hundred and fifty eight seconds.

It is important to have an exact and precise measurement, but I think this is too complicated, who cares if the roads are kind of bumpy or the buildings are kind of tilted.

Historically different methods of measurement were developed and used. As time progresses different units become obsolete. No one uses cubits or roods any more.

The king or ruling nobleman would have dictated the size of a foot which eventually became standardised as 12 inches.

The metric system has replaced the older Imperialsystem as the standard of measurement in many countries. It has the advantage of being based on the decimal system and is wholly adopted by the International Standards or SI units and the IUPAC system.

The Imperial system is still used in some countries and by older people in say Great Britain. Britain also converted their pound to a decimal system rather than the 20 shillings to a pound, 12 pence to a shilling, they now use 100 pence to a pound.

It allows people to carry out transactions effectively. If you order a 2 metre long bed for yourself, it is no good if the manufacturer's idea of a metre is 35 cm!
