Because the Americans thought this was easier instead of using the normal Liter that everyone uses, just like they use feet inches miles etc. You can calculate with Meters and Centimeters but not with feet and inches.

Feet and inches did not originate in America and neither did gallons. It is something brought over from Europe before Parliament changed it to metric. That is why when I use meters it is called converting, and when I use a ruler it is called measuring.

THey aren't, but the sixe of trashcans are measured in gallons. A "30 gallon" trashbag fits a 30 gallon can.
