While every square is a rectangle, not all rectangles are squares. A rectangle can have one pair of parallel lines that are longer then the other pair, however in a square all four sides are the same length.

To qualify to be a square, the polygon has to have BOTH 4 right angles AND 4 congruent sides. A rectangle does not have both qualifications.

Because a square has 4 equal sides but a rectangle 2 pairs of opposite equal sides of different lengths but they are both 4 sided quadrilaterals
