Your question is just like asking 'Why is the top of planet earth called North. Or why is the planet Earth always shown on maps with Australia at the bottom and Iceland at the top. The answer to all of these questions including yours, is :- because hundreds of years ago , somebody just decided to make that decision, and we all accept it as what the whole world has chosen to do. It would have been just as logical to call the negative terminal, the positive terminal, but they chose otherwise. There is no explanation needed.

What is one to the fourth power?

One to any power is still one. If the power is positive, you have 1 times itself over and over again, so it does not change. If the power is zero, the answer is always one, no matter the number. If the power is negative, you find the reciprocal of the expression and make the power positive. If the base of the exponential expression is 1, it is always one.

Why does a negative integer raised to an even power always result in a positive integer?

The multiplication rule of thumb always states that a negative number times a negative number results in a positive number. Since an even number is always divisible by two, any value raised to an even integer power will result in a positive number. However, a basic proof is presented as follows: (-A) * (-A) = A^2 ((-A) * (-A)) ^ 2 = ((-A * -A) * (-A * -A)) = A^2 * A^2 = A ^ 4 ...
