Pi is a ratio which occurs repeatedly in nature. For example, the ratio of the circumference of any circle to its diameter is pi. The ancient mathematicians from India observed this relationship in circles as well as in other places. However, it gained popularity only when the knowledge of Indian mathematicians traveled to Arabia through the Persia, who were later conquered by invading Greeks, such as Alexander the great.
