Electronic and optical data storage and processing equipment can easily identify dichotomic behaviour: a choice of two positions: for example, on or off, pit or no pit, magnetised or not magnetised. It is much easier for a machine to unambiguously decide whether a particular memory location is magnetised or not magnetised rather than work out which of 10 levels of voltage it is at. The second option is much more likely to lead to errors. For that reason the binary system is well suited for electronic and optical data storage and processing.
