Who was the first person to theorize that the earth revolves around the sun?

Nicolas Copernicus first said this in the early 1500's. Before him, most people thought that the solar system revolved around the Earth. However, if one watches the planets for enough nights, eventually they will make some strange loops that Ptolemy called "epicycles" Ptolemy's system, which lasted for about 2,000 years, was extremely complicated. Copernicus's system, though, was relatively simple; he drew perfect circles (Johannes Kepler later proved that planets follow elliptical orbits) to represent the orbits of the planets known at the time. Despite his one inaccuracy (perfect circles), Copernicus's theory was still one giant step in the right direction.

What scientific discovery was nicolaus Copernicus famous for?

Copernicus hypothesized (discovered) that the Sun is the center of the universe and that the Earth isn't. (Actually the Sun is not the center of the Universe but it its the center of our solar system). At that time the church thought that the Earth was the center of the universe and they thought that they were right all the time and Nicolas Copernicus proved them wrong and they got angry at him for doing that because a lot of people didn't trust the church any more.

Why do people remember Nicolaus Copernicus?

Copernicus was considered the father of modern astronomy because he devised a new heliocentric (Sun-centered) system. He also stated that the Earth and all the other planets revolved around a stationary central Sun.
