Why was the Globe theatre closed in 1642?

The Globe was only in use until 1613, when on June 29 a fire broke out at the Globe Theatre during the performance of King Henry VIII . The cannon that was used for special effects, such as heralding great entrances, was loaded with gunpowder and wadding, sent a piece of the smoldering wadding onto the roof. The thatched roof caught on fire and the Globe Theatre burned to the ground. There were apparently no casualties but there must have been some panic. (Pretty impressive for a facility holding 3000 people with only one exit) In 1614 the Globe Theatre was rebuilt. In 1613, the original Globe Theatre burned to the ground when a cannon shot during a performance of Henry VIII ignited the thatched roof of the gallery. The company completed a new Globe on the foundations of its predecessor before Shakespeare's death. It continued operating until 1642, when the Puritans closed it down (and all the other theatres, as well as any place, for that matter, where people might be entertained). Puritans razed the building two years later in 1644 to build tenements upon the premises. The Globe would remain a ghost for the next 352 years.

Was the Globe theatre originally called the Rose theatre?

No, the Rose theatre and the Globe theatre are two different theatres. The Rose theatre opened before the Globe theatre in 1587, and the Globe theatre opened afterwards in 1599. The Rose theatre closed in 1605, whereas the Globe Theatre was burnt down in 1613, rebuilt in 1614 and then closed in 1642. Both theatres are now rebuilt and open to the public.

When was theaters closed?

There is no one theatre which can be identified as "Shakespeare's theatre". Shakespeare performed in a number of different theatres, although most particularly in the two he owned a share in. In any case, the main reasons for theatre closures applied to all the theatres whether they had something to do with Shakespeare or not. There were two of these: all London theatres were periodically closed for a relatively short time for health reasons, and all London theatres were permanently closed in 1642 by law.

Why did Globe Theatre close for nearly two years?

The second Globe was closed along with all of the other theatres in 1642 and, since it did not appear that any money could be made from it, was torn down in 1644 about two years later. The general closure of all public theatres in 1642 was due to the Puritan parliament which viewed theatre as a godless entertainment. Several popular but wrong answers: Plague? Wrong. There was a plague closure in 1606 but nothing like the dreadful two year closure of 1593-4, five years before the Globe was built. Fire? Wrong. A fire did destroy the first Globe on June 29, 1613, but a new theatre was built on the same spot within a year, since we have records of its use the following June.
