A GFCI is not an overcurrent protection device. It only protects people from electrical shock. However, if you were to create a perfect hot to neutral short the GFCI would not trip and the panel breaker would.
Your thermostat might be shorted out. Remove one of the wires off of the stat to see if the furnace will shut down that way.

You will get reduced amperage (or output) from the alternator. A alternator rated at 80 amps would probably only produce 50-60 amps. If a diode in a rectifier is shorted, then the alternator output would be greatly reduced or possibly no output at all.

Panel pants can be comfortable but are not the best for everyone . If you have a smaller stomach this may not be best as they wont sit on the stomach right and wont be very comfortable.
