You can't because a cube has 12 edges, 6 faces and 8 vertices.

It depends on the shape. The number of edges, alone, is not enough to determine a unique shape.
They are the straight "lines" where two faces meet.
Try to picture a rectangular prism.An edge, first of all, is the line from a vertex to a vertex. The top has 4 edges and the bottom has 4. Then the connecting 4 edges, which is a total of 12 edges.

In open compositions shapes appear to be running off the edges and sides of the picture plane. This creates the sense that the work extends beyond the edges or boundaries of the picture which allows for more active eye movement
