This can be written as an equation

On the one side we have:

4s which means 4 x the age of my son.

This is the same as

2s+20 which means in 20 years I will be 2 x the age of my son.

Since I and my son do not change, both statements must be true so:

4s = 2s+20

We need to find s, so rearrange to get s on one side on its own:

4s - 2s = 20

2s = 20

s = 20 / 2

s = 10

My son is 10 years old.

To check this is correct use the answer in both the original statements to see if they are still true.

4 x 10 = 40 years. I am 40 years old.

in 20 years my son will be 30 and I will be 60. I will then be twice as old as my son.
