TDC will be the longest mark on damper you should remobe vacuum hose from distributer and block it while you set timing. remember to unplug and replace hose after you have set timing
The timing should be set at TDC (Top Dead Center). The timing marks are located on the vibration damper and timing chain cover.
timing marker for timing belt
get at it from the bottom get a white marker and mark the timing spot then go up top and you should be able to see it
warm up the engine. disable the electronic spark timing system by disconnecting the single tan wire with a black stripe. it's either under the relay cover, near the distributor, or under the dash behind the fuse panel. there's only one. loosen the distributor hold down bolt so that it can be turned by hand. it should be on the front side of the distributor, but might be awkward to get to. pulling the breather off might make it easier. connect a timing light (if it has advance, set it to 0) and point it at the crank damper / timing indicator with the engine running (be very careful of moving parts). if you can't see the mark on the damper, mark it with a white paint marker. if you can't see the numbers on the timing indicator, go over it with a wire brush. turn the distributor slowly until the mark on the damper is aligned with the 0 mark on the timing indicator. turning clockwise will move the mark clockwise and vice versa. once it's aligned, kill the engine, tighten the hold down bolt, and recheck (in case the distributor was accidentally moved). don't forget to reconnect the tan/black wire.
The timing marks show on the WDS screen. Unlike in the past where they were located in the Crankshaft damper.
Yes.
timing marks are references for the distributor ti fire on a compression stroke. The index mark is on the crank damper pulley and a marker is fixed to the block near there so when the motor is running with the index mark illuminated with white chalk or yellow and a timing light usually on number one piston you know where you are at. The degrees of time should be located on the radiator support or the hood with your emmission requirement, tune upe, spark plug gap, idle speed. or call autozone
They are on the damper. You'll need to peek under the air intake tube with your timing light at the right corner of the radiator.
on the timing cover sensing the damper
the timing mark is an engraved line on the flywheel. there should be a metal flap offset of the flywheel with markings for A (advanced), O (ontime), and R (retarded). use a timing light connected to the spark plug wire for #1 cylinder. That is how it is in my 65 impala 327 Minor correction is that the timing mark is on the front damper not the flywheel.
The water pump is driven by the timing belt, to find it you must remove the serpentine belt, crankshaft damper, and timing belt cover.
To do this job correctly the engine oil pan should be removed, this job alone will be a challenge if you are doing this in your driveway. You will also need the correct puller to remove the damper (bottom pulley). The belts, fan, shroud, pulleys, damper and water pump need to be removed.
