Earning a degree in mathematics is a great accomplishment. Many math students are so devoted to the pursuit of their degree, they often don’t know what to do with it once they’ve earned it. For those truly passionate about the subject, studying mathematics is often a reward unto itself. However, some students have a misconception that a degree in mathematics leads to one career: a math teacher. This could not be more distant from the truth. While many students do indeed go on to teach math, this is largely out of a passion for the subject and not a limitation of the degree itself. Many lucrative careers exist for individuals with at least a B.A. in mathematics.

By far the greatest strength of a mathematics degree is its focus on logical thinking. Statistics show that many math majors often pursue a double major in another career field; business and computer science are common. The added focus on mathematics demonstrates to employers that the individual in question is an expert in logical reasoning and problem solving, and these skills are seen as extremely desirable in nearly every career available. Of course, this does not mean that a math major needs to have a second area of study, only that a focus on math accentuates every other area of study. For this reason, the flexibility offered by such a degree is unmatched. Computer-related careers especially look for these logical skills; many professional programmers have degrees in mathematics.

Those with a true passion for mathematics itself (but not for teaching) may consider pursuing careers in either statistical research or finance. Research agencies hire statisticians both as independent contractors and as full-time employees, and the pay can be quite lucrative, depending on the nature of the study. Careers in finance, on the other hand, often involve the creation of mathematical models to predict future market trends.

Many individuals with a degree in mathematics take a different route, and end up in either middle or high end management positions for a variety of businesses. Put simply, every career would benefit from these problem solving skills. More open-minded math majors have seen careers in avenues ranging from politics to engineering to law enforcement.

How to Use Your Mathematics Degree?

There are many careers out there that a mathematics degree can help you obtain. Some may come to mind immediately, but there are some more obscure jobs that require or prefer a background in mathematics. One of the most well-known fields of employment for those with a mathematics degree is teaching. A Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, along with teacher certification in most cases, is enough to teach middle school or high-school mathematics. A Master’s degree in many cases will allow you to teach at a community college, and a PhD will allow you to teach mathematics at a four-year college. Jobs in the field of actuarial science have been given very high ratings in terms of job satisfaction, opportunities to advance, and salary. These jobs deal with insurance and finance, and require a major in mathematics, and you can advance by taking tests to move up to a higher level. After taking the first test or two, you can be hired, and most companies will pay you to study for advancement exams. Biology programs are trying to find mathematics majors with the right quantitative skills to use math for building biological systems. These models are useful for answering biological questions, and biologists may not have the math skills that are necessary to build an accurate one. For someone with an advanced degree in mathematics and an interest in science, this is a field to look into. The National Security Agency division of the U.S. Government is the leading single employer of mathematics majors in the country. They hire people with all levels of degrees in mathematics. These employees may work with difficult algorithms and cryptographs. The government has many other divisions of employment that require a background in mathematics, including defense, census bureau, social security and internal revenue. Applied mathematics is a growing field that has several branches of employment. Many of these branches do not require an advanced degree, although some do require a Master’s degree in a certain field, after receiving a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. There are several fields to look into if you are pursuing a mathematics degree, whether it is a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD.
