There are some types of numbers, trancendental numbers, for example, for which no ratio exists. We call those numbers irrational.

Famously, the number pi is the ratio between the diameter and circumfrence of a circle. There is no whole number ratio that can represent this relationship. Pi is both transendental and irrational.
