You have to follow the order of operations. This is known as PEMDAS:

  • Parentheses
  • Exponents
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Addition
  • Subtraction

For example, if the problem is 2(3+6-4) X 32, you must solve it according to PEMDAS. First, you do what is inside the parentheses. According to PEMDAS, you must do addition before subtraction, so 3+6-4 = 9-4 = 5. Now, you do the exponents. 32 = 3X3 = 9. Now the problem looks like this: 2(5) X 9. 2(5) is another way of saying 2 X 5, so that is 10. Now 10 X 9 is ninety. Because 2(5) X 9 is just entirely multiplication, you multiply from left to right.

Just remember, in PEMDAS, you always work out problems from left to right, meaning if everything is addition, exponents, or any of the PEMDAS steps, you solve the equation from left to right, just like you read.
